Radio sailing courses are set to suit the wind direction and conditions on the day. Most club races use simple windward/leeward courses, often called a "sausage course", where boats sail upwind to the windward marks before returning downwind to the leeward gate. The start and finish line is usually positioned near the middle of the course, with boats passing through the line as required during each lap. Gates may be used at either end of the course, giving sailors a choice of which mark to round depending on their position, wind shifts and traffic.
Before each race, the Race Officer will confirm the course, number of laps, start direction and any special instructions. New sailors should not worry if the course seems confusing at first — club members are always happy to explain the layout before racing begins.
