Nick Jerwood reigned supreme but it was a hotly contested event
Austin Lake had a healthy westerly breeze of around 10knots at 12.00pm and we set a course at the southern end to suit. As usual the direction varied and the gaps between the trees became more important than tactics on the water. 18°C with full sunshine and just a few ripple waves which the DF95 eats up very easily. Perfect conditions for a full fleet regatta.
We had 18 skippers register for today's scratch racing and the standard was again very high. The DF95 has become the favourite yacht within the club drawing out skippers for every scratch racing event we hold. Massive thank you to all those skippers that travel down to little old Austin Lake for a fun afternoon with mates. There were moments of sheer brilliance in each race with the shouts of frustration when boats found holes of calm while three metres away others flew by at high speed. It was mentioned more than once, that he should put up with it or you could be moving rocks in the garden!!! No Names mentioned. Everyone had issues with swirling winds after it had passed over the local IGA and through the trees, it is unpredictable which is good in a way. Good skippers learn to react and change their strategy to the channels of swifter breezes and away from the calm holes. There is just not the perfect course out here. The bottom marks were already as close to the east edge of the lake as we can make them. So given the above comments, we offer the top 10 skippers huge praise for starting well and finding those streams
Our winner today Nick Jerwood mastered the starts and won 5 out the 13 races, true class. In second was our clubs grand master Ian Sherriff, he sailed clear in nearly all races and ended up at the pointy end yet again.
In third place enjoying the freedom of just racing was Janet Jerwood showing a clean pair of heels to the fleet in the majority of the races sailed. Notable performers - Kim Klakka, Donks, Mark Lovelady, Jason Poutsma and Andrew Patterson, with each one winning a podium or two during the afternoon.
