Everyone came out for a massive day of big fleet racing. We had 20 boats register for a scratch racing day with our DF95's. This was not an easy day for anyone new to sailing or a little uncertain of the rules because it was on for Donkey Kong and there were moments of unbelievable sailing exploits. The forecast was for 5 knot southerly breezes across the lake, so we set up a course staying away from the trees on the southern end hoping to reduce any calm effects at the top mark. The bottom marks were placed way down on the northern shelter bank. It made the course an acceptable length but with such a big fleet staying clear was critical for all skippers. That was a lot more difficult when you tack away from crossing boats and find no wind on the other side of the passing boat. This was even catastrophic at the actual mark, since six boats don't normally round at the same time and there was inevitable contact called because room was not offered. A few (including me once, penalty done!) tried to squeeze in to the top mark on Port tack, which is always going to end badly. Need to think, just go behind into clear air so there is no contact. Even downwind legs go smoother when you just go behind where the tight hauled skippers are heading. 90% of the head on issues happen when you try to pass in front. Downwind you generally have more options to evade compared to an upwind boat tight hauled. He can only relax sails and go farther off the wind or he could tack.
I am amazed at our leading pair of skippers Sean Wallis and Nick Jerwood. They found space and lifts that few could match and as a result skipped away in so many races. It is a high bar for the fleet to aspire to reach. They gathered 7 individual race wins between them and controlled the outcome in most races.
Behind them was a strong group of chasers. The next 10 skippers put plenty of pressure on our leaders in nearly every race achieving six individual race wins between the next 4 skippers. But getting to the front and staying there for the whole race when these boats are so evenly paced, is super challenging.
One stand out moment needs mentioning. Mark Robins' one great Port tack right up through the pack in race seven that had us all agasp. How does this man do it???? He flew away and rounded the top mark well ahead holding on to take the race win. Awesome effort.
We unfortunately had a few servo issues pop up which grounded those boats. We thank the skippers that stayed and acted as PRO and race recorder for the remaining regatta. The club needs volunteers and anyone helping is valued very highly and we thank you yet again.
